Within the framework of this regulation, the university administration issues the regulations that apply in each individual institution.

Read more in The Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Section 4, that regulates doctoral students on scholarship. The Higher Education Ordinance

The Higher Education Ordinance includes that a doctoral student adopted after June 30th, 2018 is to be employed by the university when no more than three years of full-time remains to doctoral graduation. This means that scholarship only can be received in the equivalent of the first year. If the goal of the research studies is a licentiate degree, scholarship funding is not possible.

For applicants admitted as a doctoral student before July 1st, 2018, the foundation can support the student for all years until graduation. However, only scholarships for a maximum of four years full-time studies can be granted.

The regulation also states that the university is to sign insurance for students with scholarship funding, through The Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet), Chapter 1, Section 11 c.

Scholarship 2026

The scholarship goes to the student personally and is tax-exempt. It is calculated to cover basic living expenses and accommodation for a doctoral student for one year. Students may only apply for the scholarship for one year at a time and it consists of monthly payments. The amount for scholarships granted in 2026 is SEK 29,500 per month, for a maximum of 12 months. Accordingly, a full-year scholarship for postgraduate studies on a full-time basis granted 2026 is SEK 354,000. If the student intends to undertake postgraduate studies part-time or full-time for only part of the year, this must be stated in the application and the scholarship amount will be adjusted accordingly.

The scholarship for 2026 may begin to be lifted no earlier than May 2026 and at the latest in April 2027. If project launch is postponed until later than April 2027, the scholarship will be canceled and, instead, a new application must be made in the next year’s application; January/February 2027. The applicant must be formally admitted as a doctoral student at the university by the time of the first scholarship payment.

Generally, in total around ten to fifteen scholarships are granted each year.

Online application procedure

The Foundation uses an online application system – Researchweb. Information about the various steps involved in applying for a scholarship from the Lars Erik Lundberg Scholarship Foundation is provided below. It is important that you read these instructions before you create an account, log in and begin an application.

The Foundation receives applications during only one period each year. You can apply for a scholarship via our online application system and the application period begins on JANUARY 1, 2026 at 12:01 a.m. Applications must be received by the Foundation not later than Monday FEBRUARY 9, 2026 at 11:59 p.m.

The application form can be opened and viewed as an exercise application before the start of the application period, but you will not be able to save changes to the form until after the turn of the year.

To access the online application system, click on the APPLY HERE button above to the right, or click here.

For technical support; Contact support@researchweb.org.

Create a user account – applicants and supervisors

Before you can use the application system, you need to create an account with your own personal profile. Your personal profile contains your contact details, such as your name, place of work and e-mail address. Always also provide an alternative email address. In connection with this, you also need to digitally approve a consent agreement for the processing of personal data.

Click on ”Log in” and “Create New User,” fill in the form for your personal profile according to the instructions and click on “Register.” An e-mail message will be sent to you with login details, including a temporary password. Follow the instructions to create your account.

To change to your own password, click on your name in the upper right corner, go to “My Profile” and “Password.” Your new password must contain at least eight (8) characters, of which at least six (6) are not the same, and your password must contain at least one upper-case (capital) letter and two digits (0-9).

You can then log in using your e-mail address and your password.

At a later stage your supervisor/supervisors need to create an account in the system in the same way. You invite the supervisor via the application form and, after accepting the invitation and creating a user account, they are given access to the application. It is important that the supervisor’s user account is created with the same e-mail address to which the invitation was sent. NOTE! Check that your supervisor has approved the invitation no later than the last application day, otherwise the application will be incomplete.

Create application

Specify whether your application is a first-time application (you have not previously been granted a scholarship from the Lundberg Foundation) or a continuation scholarship (you have previously been granted a scholarship from the Lundberg Foundation for your doctoral project). Your choice determines which application form opens.

Fill in the application form on the screen according to the instructions. Invite your supervisor to the application by entering their name and e-mail address. The supervisor then receives an invitation and must approve it and create a user account for the connection to be activated.

Attach PDF documents: CV (required), signed recommendation letter from your supervisor (required), project attachments (if applicable), and study plan (if applicable).

You can save your application and continue with it at a later time. Up until the last day for applications, it can be changed and resubmitted.

Selection process

The Expert Committee considers applications during the spring. You can read more about the assessment process under SELECTION CRITERIA – PHD STUDENT. Decisions on which applicants will be offered scholarships are made at the Foundation’s Board meeting in April. Applicants are notified via e-mail as soon as possible after this decision.

Applicants offered a scholarship are required to confirm their acceptance of the scholarship.
